Trash and Recycling

The City contracts with Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) for trash and recycling services. Please contact LRS directly at LRSrecycles.com/desplaines or 844-NEED-LRS for service and billing questions.

Trash/Garbage Disposal

You will be provided one garbage cart by LRS, which will be serviced on a weekly basis. Cart size options: 35-gallon, 65-gallon and 95-gallon (95-gallon will be the default size). One ‘bulk’ item a week may be placed out for collection at no additional charge. Additional bulk items may be placed out for collection but may result in a service charge. Additional waste carts may be rented at a cost of $3 per month.

Senior Citizen Discount

LRS has a discount program for senior citizens. Fill out this application and send via email or mail, along with proof of age and eligibility in the form of a valid state-issued driver’s license or identification card or United States passport. Call 844-NEED-LRS with any questions.

Recycling

You will be provided one recycling cart by LRS, which will be serviced on a weekly basis. Cart size options: 35-gallon, 65-gallon and 95-gallon (65-gallon will be the default size). Your recycling service will continue to be defined as single-stream, which means most clean and non-contaminated household items will be considered recyclable. Additional recycling carts may be rented at a cost of $3 per month.

Please note that LRS Carts are both blue. Trash carts are indicated with "Landfill Only" on the lid. Recycling carts have a lighter blue lid and have a sticker with recyclable materials. Items should be clean, empty, and not in garbage bags. 

Acceptable Items:

  • Metal: steel and aluminum containers, foil.
  • Paper: flattened cardboard, office paper, newspaper, magazines.
  • Glass: bottles and jars only.
  • Plastic: bottles, tubs, jugs, and jars only.
  • Cartons.

Unacceptable Items:

  • Plastic bags or product wrap. these can sometimes be returned clean to seller.
  • Large items such as electronics, wood, propane tanks, scrap metal or styrofoam. See disposal of odd items section.
  • Tanglers, including hangers, hoses, wire, cords, ropes or chaines.
  • Clothing, shoes, or textiles of any kind.
  • Food, liquid, diapers, batteries or needles.
  • Shredded paper. This can be recycled at one of the City's shred events.

Yard Waste

Similar to your waste and recycling service, LRS will provide collection of properly placed yard waste material on a weekly basis. This service is seasonal, and will run from April 1 through the end of November. All yard waste must be placed in a proper receptacle, not to exceed 50lbs in weight. Paper kraft bags may also be used. User-owned cans should not exceed 35-gallons and should be clearly marked as ‘Yard Waste.’ Cans and kraft bags that contain excessive amounts of soil, dirt or earth may go uncollected. LRS will also take bundles of sticks, twigs and branches that are no more than 4’ in length and 18” in diameter.

Your yard waste collection day will be the same as your waste and recycling collection day. All items and material should be placed out for collection by 7 a.m. 

The City has several methods of disposal of "odd" items for residents. Some are through our contracted waste hauler, LRS, while some can be dropped off at Public Works (1111 Joseph Schwab Road) Wednesdays only, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

How do I dispose of...

Bulk Items

One ‘bulk’ item may be placed out for collection each week at no additional cost. ‘Bulk’ items are defined as items too large to fit into your waste cart, and 50lbs in weight or less. ‘Bulk’ items do not include ‘white’ goods (appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, etc.) or electronic waste, certain types of construction debris (concrete, stone, masonry etc.), dirt, tree stumps and engines, among other items. For safety reasons, LRS prefers that all mattresses are wrapped in plastic or placed in a mattress bag. For additional ‘bulk’ collection outside of the weekly limit of one item, please contact LRS to schedule service. Items will be charged on a per-yard basis.

White Goods

‘White’ goods are generally defined as appliances like refrigerators, washers and dryers, ovens, but include other items as well. LRS will collect these items, but they must be scheduled for collection. Please remove doors from the appliance. Contact LRS to learn about collection fees and scheduling.

Batteries

Automobile batteries: Residents only may bring automobile batteries to Public Works. Limit 2.

Household batteries: Residents only may bring household batteries to Public Works. Nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion and small sealed lead batteries accepted. Batteries over 1.5V must be taped.

Construction Debris

Up to one cubic yard of construction debris may be placed out for collection each week. Construction debris is defined as basic material that is consistent with household projects, renovations and clean-outs.

Vulcan Materials of Elk Grove 847-437-4181 can be contacted for disposal of asphalt, brick or concrete at a cost.

Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore accepts re-usable, undamaged housing materials such as doors, flooring, lumber, hardware, etc. 847-742-9905.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Hardware stores including Ace, Home Depot and True Value accept compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s) for recycling. Get a list of locations.

Another option, for Des Plaines residents only, is to bring household fluorescent light bulbs to Public Works. Limit 4.

Household Hazardous Waste

Year-round Household Hazardous Waste disposal is available through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Please contact IEPA at 217-785-8604 or check the IEPA website for further information.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) in Gurnee also accepts Household Hazardous Waste, by appointment only, twice per month: the second Saturday of every month and the fourth Monday of every month (except December). To schedule an appointment, contact SWALCO at 847-336-9340.

Motor Oil

O'Reilly Auto Parts accepts motor oil and oil filters for recycling, 1589 Lee St, Des Plaines. 847-635-6014. Other garages may also accept items.

Paint

Open latex paint can(s) in a well-ventilated area and allow the paint to dry and harden completely (this may take a few days). An absorbent such as cat litter, sand or shredded paper may be added to absorb the moisture. Make sure the mixture is completely dry before disposing of the latex paint can in the garbage container.

Oil-based paints must be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

Prescription Medication Disposal

There is a drug collection bin in the lobby of the Des Plaines Police Department at 1440 Miner Street, Des Plaines. Find other locations through the Illinois EPA.

Tires

Recycle your tires at ease! Des Plaines residents may bring tires (no rims) to our Public Works facility. Limit 2 tires per drop-off.

Electronics Recycling

Drop-Off Location

Des Plaines Public Works will accept all computer components, phone equipment, hand-held electronics, DVDs, VCRs and televisions for recycling from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., every Wednesday, at the Public Works Garage, 1111 Joseph J. Schwab (Campground) Road. The City’s contracted recycling company will wipe all computer hard drives to the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) standards. Computers that meet requirements are then refurbished while unusable equipment is recycled responsibly in accordance with the Illinois Electronics Reuse & Recycling Act. Household appliances (white goods) will not be accepted.

Curbside Pick Up

The City has a contract with Lakeshore Recycling Systems for Des Plaines residents living in single-family or multi-family homes up to four units. Electronic waste (or e-waste) such as computers, televisions, etc. is accepted curbside by LRS monthly. It is encouraged that you contact the customer service department to schedule services for these items. 844-NEED-LRS or service@lrsrecycles.com.

LRS Holiday Service Dates

LRS recognizes six holidays per year. Service on or before the holiday will be delayed by one day, and will not be affected if your service falls before the holiday. Friday service is always completed on Saturday. Service will not occur on the following days:

  • New Year's Day (Wednesday, January 1, 2026): Collection will be postponed by one day for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday service days. Monday and Tuesday will have regular service.
  • Memorial Day (Monday, May 26, 2026): Collection will be postponed by one day for the entire week.
  • Independence Day (Friday, July 4, 2026): Collection will be postponed by one day for Friday service. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will have regular service.
  • Labor Day (Monday, September 1, 2026): Collection will be postponed by one day for the entire week.
  • Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 27, 2026): Collection will be postponed by one day for Thursday and Friday service days. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will have regular service.
  • Christmas Day (Thursday, December 25, 2026): Collection will be postponed by one day for Thursday and Friday service days. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will have regular service.
