Oversize/Overweight Permits

The City uses Oxcart Permit Systems for issuing, tacking, and collecting fees for Overweight and Oversize permits.  All trucking that exceeds legal size or weight limits travelling on Des Plaines roadways must apply for an Oversize/Overweight permit.  Please allow for 2-3 business days for permit review.

Permit fees are as follows:

$35 for a Single Trip, valid for 30 days from issued date

$70 for a Round Trip, valid for 100 days from issued date

$500 for Continuous Operation, valid for 365 days from issued date

Utility/ROW Permits

All entities conducting work in City owned, maintained Right-of-Way (ROW), Public Ways shall apply for and receive a permit prior to the commencement of such work, repair or construction.

One copy of the permit application must be fully completed, signed and returned with all required attachments to: City of Des Plaines Public Works and Engineering Department, 1420 Miner Street, Room 504, Des Plaines, IL 60016. Permit applications may also be faxed to (847) 391-5619 or emailed to engineering@desplainesil.gov.  Please allow for 7-10 business days for permit review.

Every utility that occupies right-of-way within the City shall register on January 1 of each year with the Director of Public Works and Engineering, providing the utility's name, address and regular business telephone and telecopy numbers, the name of one or more contact persons who can act on behalf of the utility in connection with emergencies involving the utility's facilities in the right-of-way and a 24 hour telephone number for each such person, and evidence of insurance as required in section 9-5-8 of the City Code, in the form of a certificate of insurance. A telecommunications provider that has registered under this section, shall be deemed to have satisfied the registration requirement herein.

Unless otherwise provided by chapter 9-5-4 of the City Code, a franchise, a license, or a similar agreement, and except for small wireless facilities provided in subsection 9-5-13C of the City Code, all applications for permits pursuant to this chapter shall be accompanied by a fee in the amount of $50. Except for the data, site, and plan review fee, no application fee is required to be paid by any telecommunications retailer that is paying the Municipal telecommunications infrastructure maintenance fee or the optional State telecommunications infrastructure maintenance fee pursuant to the Telecommunications Municipal Infrastructure Maintenance Fee Act, or by any electricity utility that is paying the Municipal electricity infrastructure maintenance fee pursuant to the Electricity Infrastructure Maintenance Fee Act.

Small Wireless Facilities shall apply through the Building and Permits portal through the Community and Economic Development Department.
