Sewer System

The City operates and maintains 188+ miles of storm sewer and 169 miles of sanitary and combined sewers. Our work includes main line rodding and root cutting, main line televising, lift station operation/maintenance, catch basin cleaning, flood response and utility locating.

We also work collaboratively with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago on various storm and sanitary projects, as well as monitoring the City’s connections with the District's system.

Note that Illinois American Water provides both water and sewer services for certain areas of Des Plaines. If you are located in this area, please contact Illinois American Water directly for questions about service or billing issues.

Sanitary Sewer Lateral Program

Sanitary Sewer Back-Up? The Sanitary Sewer Lateral Program provides limited financial assistance to residents facing sanitary sewer complications within qualifying areas. A sanitary sewer lateral is the section of the homeowner's sewer line that runs from the house to the sewer main in the street, parkway or easement area.

If a Des Plaines homeowner experiences a sanitary sewer back-up, they could be eligible for financial assistance from the City (maximum of 30% reimbursement). The Sanitary Sewer Lateral Program provides financial assistance to residents facing sanitary sewer complications within qualifying areas.
